Position Title: Fiber Engineer
Location: Atlanta, GA
Reports To: Director of Network Planning
Employment Type: Full-Time
Summary:
With appropriate guidance from the Director of Network Planning, this position is responsible for the design, documentation, and implementation of Outside Plant (OSP) fiber optic facilities, as well as providing recommendations for Inside Plant (ISP) related to new and existing network builds. This role leverages ArcGIS and 3-GIS to manage network records, plan expansions, and maintain accurate as-built documentation.
The Fiber Engineer will collaborate with Sales Engineering, Construction, NOC, and Field Operations to support customer connectivity, backbone builds, and metro expansions. Responsibilities include route design, permitting support, splice planning, and ensuring compliance with state, local, and utility right-of-way requirements.
Job requirements
▪ With appropriate guidance, manage the implementation of OSP facilities, including preparation of design and construction specifications, material specifications, and maintenance of system documentation.
▪ Perform detailed fiber optic route design, splice plans, and BOM preparation using ArcGIS and 3-GIS.
▪ Maintain and update as-built documentation within 3-GIS inventory systems.
▪ Conduct feasibility studies, route walks, and permitting coordination to support new builds and expansions.
▪ Provide recommendations for OSP and ISP connectivity, including customer laterals, backbone fiber, and metro expansion projects.
▪ Support NOC and Field Operations with troubleshooting, OTDR analysis, and splice documentation during maintenance and emergency events.
▪ Develop and coordinate project schedules to manage consultants, contractors, vendors, and internal staff on facilities implementation.
▪ Meet with municipalities, DOT agencies, utilities, and customers to determine interconnection or interface requirements.
▪ Support Sales Engineering with mapping, design validation, and responses to customer RFPs.
▪ Ensure all designs comply with Accelecom standards, permitting requirements, and industry best practices.
▪ Various ad-hoc requests related to network inventory records management, operations, & network planning
Skills and Abilities
▪ Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
▪ Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and timeliness.
▪ Strong knowledge of OSP fiber design principles, permitting processes, and construction methods.
▪ Proficiency with ArcGIS, 3-GIS, Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, Visio, and Outlook.
▪ Ability to read, interpret, and prepare utility maps, as-builts, and splice documentation.
▪ Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills to work effectively with internal teams, customers, and external partners.
▪ Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
▪ Ability to travel by automobile for site walks, inspections, and vendor coordination.
Education/Experience:
▪ Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
▪ Minimum 3 years of experience in fiber optic network design and engineering.
▪ Demonstrated expertise with ArcGIS and 3-GIS for network planning and inventory management.
▪ Experience with OSP design, construction oversight, and ISP recommendations.
Certification/License:
▪ Must have a valid Driver’s License and a good driving record.
▪ Industry certifications (e.g., fiber design, GIS, or EIT) preferred.
Physical Standards:
▪ Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
▪ General office demands with extended periods of sitting.
▪ Ability to travel regionally by automobile as needed.
