Job description

We are seeking a skilled and experienced telecommunication GIS Administrator to join our team and play a leading role in managing our geographic information systems (GIS) infrastructure. This position can be located in Louisville, Kentucky or Atlanta, Georgia.

Accelecom provides next-generation fiber-based services throughout Georgia and Kentucky and employs state-of-the-art GIS mapping technology to track all aspects of our fiber networks. Accelecom is seeking a GIS Design Administrator to oversee and administer the company's GIS platforms in support of multiple mission-critical use cases, including market developments, sales, network planning, engineering, construction, service assurance, and asset management. 

As a GIS Administrator, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and administration of our GIS systems. You will work closely with various departments within the organization to ensure that GIS technologies meet their needs and support their initiatives. Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Defining and maintaining our naming conventions, schemas and other aspects of rendering our networks as digital abstractions in our GIS platforms.
  • Ensure all users adhere to the naming standards and use cases relative to the various map layers and use cases
  • Ensure that our GIS platforms are accurate, including our base as-built maps, under-construction maps, planned routes, on-net buildings, near-net buildings, customers and key data centers/points of presence
  • As changes to the network occur, ensure those changes are identified and updated onto our GIS platforms as quickly as practicable
  • Managing GIS databases, including data acquisition, storage, and retrieval.
  • Designing and implementing GIS applications and tools to support organizational requirements.
  • Configuring and maintaining GIS software, including updates, patches, and troubleshooting.
  • Providing technical support and training to users of GIS systems.
  • Developing and documenting GIS workflows and procedures.
  • Collaborating with other IT professionals to integrate GIS with other systems and applications.
  • Monitoring system performance and implementing optimizations to ensure reliability and efficiency.
  • Maintaining data security and integrity in accordance with organizational policies and industry best practices.
  • Keeping abreast of developments in GIS technology and recommending enhancements or upgrades as needed.

Job requirements

  • Familiarity and knowledge of applying GIS mapping to fiber optic and Layer 3 networking concepts for both outside plant as well as inside plant networking facilities, including:
    • Active and Passive fiber optic networking
    • Buried and aerial aspects of running line, slack loops, splice enclosures, ect
    • Fiber optic strand management & fiber optic strand assignment tracking
    • Data Center and PoP cable routing
    • Various Layer 1,2 and 3 networking equipment familiarity
  • Bachelor’s Degree: A 4-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent technical study in a relevant field is required.
  • GISP Certification (Preferred): While not mandatory, having a Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification is preferred.
  • Five plus years of Experience with ESRI ARCGIS Pro and ArcMap Online in an outside/inside plant telecommunications setting:
    • Experience with 3GIS (Preferred)
    • ARCGIS Pro: Proficiency in using ARCGIS Pro for geospatial analysis, mapping, and data visualization.
    • ArcMap Online: Hands-on experience with ArcMap Online for creating and managing maps, layers, and web applications.
    • ArcGIS Online Skills:
      • Webmap Creation: Proficiency in creating webmaps using ArcGIS Online.
      • WebApp Builder: Familiarity with building web applications using ArcGIS WebApp Builder.
  • Experience with GIS database management (e.g., PostgreSQL, Oracle Spatial).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, JavaScript) is a plus.

    • Board-Level Engagement: Engaging with board members to align GIS initiatives with organizational goals.
